Hanging / Bagging Items
Please do not use straight pins! Safety pins only!
Clothing:
All items should be hung on wire hangers with the hanger hook facing left. (See "Why wire hangers?") Safety pin shirts to the hangers if necessary to prevent sliding off. Pants/shorts/skirts should be hung on the upper part of the hanger with the pins close to the hook so they won't slide to the bottom part (otherwise they bunch-up and people won't buy them). With clothing sets, pin the bottom BEHIND (not under) the top. Be sure the pins go through the hanger and not just the shirt to avoid damaging the shirt.
Button all buttons, snap all snaps, tie all bows, zip all zippers. The nicer your items look, the better they sell. Safety pin any matching accessories to the outfit.
Please use med or large safety pins, NOT straight pins or small gold safety pins. Also, we request that you use wire hangers, plastic tube hangers take up much more rack space and make it hard to shop. You can get pins at discount stores (Dollar Tree, Wal Mart). Ask your dry cleaner for wire hangers, they usually have an abundance.
Shoes:
Please do NOT put shoes in boxes. Shoes can be secured together using shoelaces, safety pins or a zip tie. Attach the tag through the laces using a large safety pin, string or ribbon. Place a small strip of masking tape with your consignor number and the price on the bottom of both shoes in case they get separated or the tag gets lost. Please remember to attach the index card in addition to the masking tape.
Large items:
In addition to the index card tag, place masking tape with your consignor # and the price on the item. This helps in the event the tag is lost.
Small items:
Large Ziploc bags with the tags attached to the OUTSIDE work well for small items such as bibs, socks, onesies, etc. Attach the tags with either a safety pin or packing tape. Any bags of toys should be securely sealed closed with packing tape as well. They are an incredible temptation to the children shoppers.
Toys with multiple parts:
Again, large Ziploc bags work very well. Be sure to attach your tag to the OUTSIDE and secure the bag closed with packing tape. If part of a larger toy, tape the sealed and taped bag to the larger item. Keep in mind, children want to play with these toys and we cannot be responsible for any missing pieces, so protect your items.
Bedding:
The original bedding bag is ideal. If you don't have that, use a clear bag and tape or pin your tag to the outside.
Books:
Put your books in a Ziplock bag and seal it shut with packing tape. Tape or pin the tag to the outside, and list all book titles on the tag. If the books are too big for a Ziplock, you can bind them together with Saran Wrap.
- wire hangers take less space on the racks:
The clothes are more "shoppable". In other words, shoppers can easily slide clothes back and forth on the racks to browse size ranges. The tighter and more difficult the clothes are to shop, the less likely shoppers are to buy your items.
In addition, while we try to have adequate rack space, if everyone used plasic hangers, we'd have to build more racks. More racks mean a larger location and a higher rental cost, resulting in higher consignor fees (some sales charge as much as $12 to consign with them).
- You can't pin items to plastic hangers:
Pants and multiple item sets need to be pinned to the hangers.
There's an example HERE.
The retail plastic pants hangers aren't usually strong enough to hold pants for the duration of the sale. If something is on the floor, it's not going to sell. - Plastic retail hangers break:
Shoppers get enthusiastic during the sale. As clothes are shuffled back and forth on the racks, the hangers are subjected to a lot of abuse. Many times, the plastic retail hangers will break and the items will fall to the floor. Stuff on the floor doesn't sell. If the item doesn't fall, the hanger can leave a sharp point that will tear your item or another one on the rack. Torn items don't sell either. - Wire hangers display clothes nicely:
Even baby clothes can be hung on wire hangers if the hanger is fed through the bottom. The sleeves stand out and the front of the outfit is usually laid out flat so shoppers can easily see the quality and condition of an item. If a plastic hanger is too small for the item, then the item is saggy and wrinkled looking. The nicer the display, the more shoppers will buy, resulting in a larger check for you! - wire hangers are free! Just ask your local dry cleaner for any extras they have.
